A initiative called ‘Birth to 5: Watch Me Thrive!’ was launched recently by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to promote behavioral and developmental screening for young children ages birth to 5. By raising awareness of child development, the program will help families look for and celebrate milestones, promote universal screenings, identify delays as early as possible, and improve the support available to help children succeed.

Multiple resources and supports are available for early childhood professionals and families to help track progress and determine potential delays in young children.

Cavity Dragons uses an interactive video game to motivate kids to brush their teeth.  Children move a fireman, who shoots a hose of toothpaste to eliminate cavity dragons, fires, and food from a mouthful of teeth.  Children earn virtual stickers for cleaning the teeth and can save the stickers to their device’s photo album.  Other pages of the game feature brushing the teeth with a fireman on a skateboard toothbrush, assembling puzzle teeth, and decorating a fire station.

Dance Unlimited is a dance class for children of all ability levels. Classes includes stretching, various dance styles, balance and coordination activities, and self-esteem building. Fun props and popular music are used and moves are adapted for children confined to a wheelchair. There is a performance at the end of each session.

Classes are for boys and girls ages 4 and older.

A tool for parents, therapists and educators to help teach pre-writing skills to children in order to build a strong foundation for beginning printers. This app was created by an Occupational Therapist with 25 years’ experience.

Stepping Stones and United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cincinnati (UCP) combined services and facilities to become a single agency. Stepping Stones serves children, teens and adults ages 5 to 22 with an array of developmental disabilities including autism.

Stepping Stones works with schools to provide an alternative education for elementary, middle school and high school students on the autism spectrum who are not succeeding in a traditional school setting.

The program is designed to enable students to increase communication, social skills, functional academics, and functional living skills while developing acceptable behaviors so they may participate more fully in family interaction and community. The goal of the program is to provide each student with the tools to transition back to their community school district.

Respite weekends are offered one weekend every month, Sept. – May for individuals 7 years and older, including adults. Registration deadline for each weekend session is one week prior to the start date of that session.

A grant is available for self-pay families to offset a portion of the fees. Camp Cheerful is a waiver provider: IO, Level 1 and SELF Waivers are accepted.

Recreational day camp program for children ages 5 and up with and without special needs. An all-encompassing program that empowers Avon Lake students to participate in the community through project based learning, building lasting friendships and fostering success in their academic and IEP goals.

Serves ages 5 – 21, for a six week program.

Camp L.U.C.K.Y. (Language Unlocks Communication for Kids. Yes!) is offered to all children between the developmental ages of 2 to 18 years of age who need to improve their social skills and/or speech/language development. Campers may need to improve: eye-contact, sharing, turn-taking, staying on topic, maintaining a conversation, empathy, and/or the over all intelligibility of speech. They address IEP (Individualized Education Plan) goals if needed.

Each week has a new theme as the focus for the week’s activities.

Several day and residential camps with different specialties, including sports skills, arts, biking and science. Each of the six camp sessions is one week long. It serves children with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, Asperger’s Syndrome and behavior disorders from ages 6 through 18. Scholarships are available.

Weekly based residential and day summer camp for school-aged children and adults. Each week will have its own theme with a variety of activities and entertainment.

Respite camp is available during the school year as well.

SBC has partnered with Macedonia Day Camp to provide Camp & Extended School Year Services to Children with ASD and other developmental disorders or behavioral needs. The camp is integrated within Camp Macedonia offering services to children with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disorders.

Each camper is provided 1:1 or 1:2, depending on need, assistance to facilitate interactions and instruction throughout the day. Campers will have full inclusion opportunities. Camp is for kids aged 6-11 years old.

The camp assists children with differing abilities, while fostering their unique talents and gifts in a creative and structured environment. Summer vacation can be challenging for kids, but at Camp Sunshine, they can truly enjoy a fun summer camp with their friends! Developed to maintain skills learned throughout the school year, Camp Sunshine encourages retention and growth of social, academic, and daily living skills.

An educational, training and resource facility for children and young adults with autism and their families. It serves students ages kindergarten (age 5) through age 21. The focus is on academics, behavior, social skills, communication and language development, independent living, and pre-vocational and community skills.

Clinic is expanding to offer treatment to children and adolescents, as well as adults.

Fees range from $5 to $50 an hour, based on a client’s income. Prospective clients are given a free assessment to determine treatment plan.

The clinic offers cognitive behavior therapy for people coping with trauma, anxiety, nervousness, worry, sadness, depression or loss. It also provides psycho-educational assessments for possible learning disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).

Summer day camps are offered weekly in June, July, and August. Counselors (a team of OTs, PTs, and SLPs) provide opportunities to facilitate each child’s goals while participating in camp activities. The activities included will address skills such as fine motor, gross motor, sensory motor, communication, and social interaction. Camp sessions are in the mornings.

Each week will include time with farm animals and other activities such as gardening and art. They welcome children of all abilities, including typically developing children.

Catalyst Farm Therapies is an outpatient practice offering OT, PT, SLP and Counseling. This practice offers a highly motivating environment in which to work on ones therapy goals with an “outside the box” approach. Located on a farm with indoor and outdoor treatment spaces, they are able to provide a dynamic, yet serene, experience for their patients. The Therapists are able to utilize the animals (goats, pigs, chickens, horses…just to name a few) as either tools in the session or motivation at the end. Traditional and farm based techniques are integrated to create a comprehensive approach. In addition to private therapy sessions, Catalyst Farm offers: social skills groups, gross motor play groups, life skills groups, loss and grief counseling groups as well as adult and family counseling. Occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy is offered for patients ages 3 through mid 20s while counseling services are available for all ages.

The new Cleveland Children’s Museum has created a sensory friendly room in partnership with Monarch School for Autism.

It supports their mission for learning and development of all children. Located on the main floor of the museum, everything in the dimly-lit room is designed to help calm a child or adult down.

The museum opened in its new location November 6, 2017 with newly-designed exhibits for children and adults of all ages.

The Comprehensive Care Program sees patients with a variety of chronic health problems, including developmental delays and intellectual disabilities. They cover all aspects of care, from basic physical exams to accessing community services. Each patient is assigned an RN Care Coordinator, who helps with coordinating appointments and helps the patient (and their family) find any resources they may need.

The MetroHealth Autism Assessment Clinic (MAAC) evaluates developmental and behavior concerns, including autism. People meet one-on-one with a comprehensive care physician who is board-certified in neurodevelopmental disabilities and behavioral pediatrics. The Behavior Assessment Clinic is typically held once a month.

Your child doesn’t have to be a patient of the Comprehensive Care Program or a MetroHealth patient to use MAAC. You can just make an appointment, or you can get a referral from your child’s doctor. After you schedule your first appointment, a care coordinator will contact you.

Dahlberg Gibson Learning Center is an intervention program for infants, toddlers and preschool-age children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The school uses early intervention strategies, peer play models and play-based curriculum to foster student learning and growth.

Older, preschool-age children with intellectual and developmental disabilities attend the Dahlberg Gibson Learning Center alongside typically developing children in an integrated classroom. Typically developing children attend the preschool free of charge. They serve as peer play models for the children with disabilities, while they receive the educational services to develop their own self-regulation and problem-solving skills.

Clinical psychologist specializing in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety in children and adults. She focuses on providing evidence-based treatments to children, adolescents, adults, and families, with a specialization in anxiety disorders.

A full-day, center-based, intensive behavioral program serving children from age of earliest diagnosis through age five. The program focuses on teaching communication, play, socialization, and developmentally appropriate skills. We offer parents a variety of opportunities for coaching, including a lecture series and guided classroom and home visits.

The Center for Autism also offers an integrated part-time preschool program for children with high functioning autism three full days per week. Early Intervention (EI) is a statewide system that provides coordinated early intervention services to parents of eligible children under the age of three with developmental delays or disabilities. This camp is for children ages 4 to 6 who will not enter Kindergarten in the Fall. Sessions will emphasize fine motor skills needed for pre-writing, grasp, introduction to upper case letters, writing name, attention to task, turn taking, and two hand use through a variety of sensory experiences and games. Game On provides an activity and adventure-based learning program for children with high functioning autism and their peers. The school year program meets once a week for 90 minutes, and provides children on the spectrum and peer models with a fun, safe, accepting environment designed to provide them with the tools they need to appropriately interact with many diverse individuals and environments.

The school year is broken up into four quarters at a total of 24 sessions that do not conflict with holidays or breaks.

Game On Summer Camp is a nature-based day camp for school-aged children and teens that encourages social interactions while cultivating a connection with the outdoors.

Hattie Larlham is a nonprofit organization that provides medical, residential, recreational and work training services to 1,800 children and adults with developmental disabilities. The organization provides services to children and young adults at the Hattie Larlham Center for Children with Disabilities in Mantua, Ohio, and to adults at community-based homes throughout Ohio.

A team of medical professionals, including doctors, nurses and therapists tend to the complex health requirements of Hattie Larlham residents, whether they live at the Hattie Larlham Center for Children with Disabilities or in community-based homes throughout Northeast Ohio.

Each student will be taught a specific curriculum based on their IEP requirements. In addition to a traditional learning environment, Highlands offers a Career-Based Intervention program. This program focuses on students identified as disadvantaged and having barriers to career and academic success.

This inclusive playground includes areas of water play, structured play, and nature play with swings and slides, a sand pit, and a spray park along with a tree house, stage and a bamboo maze.

BREATHE is a program that provides respite care for children with special needs, over the age of 2, along with their siblings. All children will enjoy a supervised evening of food and fun, while parents and caregivers enjoy a night to relax. During the 3 hour event, children enjoy fun activities such as arts and crafts, games, yoga, therapy dogs, and special entertainment. It is staffed with doctors, nurses, and many professionals experienced in working with children that have special needs. Breathe is a peanut free environment and close attention is given to understanding the needs of those attending.

Breathe is held four times a year in the community room at Holy Angels between 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

A martial arts curriculum that offers physical benefits including enhanced fitness, increased balance and coordination, and overall improvement in muscle development and usage. The LEAD classrooms provide an opportunity for students to feel a sense of belonging and demonstrate success and generosity on a regular basis. Emphasis is placed on students developing independence by taking responsibility for their decisions and actions. Students will participate in learning that is relevant and applicable to life outside of school while attending LEAD.

This is an informal and fun exercise class for ages 10-18 with peer volunteers that emphasizes movement and social interaction. Sessions are separated by gender.

They also provide a Special Needs Camp, which introduces athletes with special needs to the basics of multiple sports.

Beginning late 2018/early 2019 KidsLink will be launching their KidsLink Connect Division. KidsLink Connect will offer intensive, insurance-based

Programming will be led by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and will include assessment, program development, parent training, and consultation. Early Identification of Autism Clinic — they will evaluate children under the age of 3 years (36 months) for a potential autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The multidisciplinary team includes a clinical psychologist and a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who can accurately and efficiently assess your child and provide recommendations for growth. Families can expect to complete information gathering/prework by phone or video conference and meet for a single, 3-to-4-hour evaluation appointment. The appointment concludes with diagnostic feedback and families will receive a brief report that day with diagnosis (if applicable), recommendations, and guidance that can be used to seek necessary interventions. A detailed report will be mailed within two weeks.

Teen/adult Services — they offer an executive functioning clinic and a teen emotional regulation clinic.

Campers build experience and skills in music, drama and dance in a variety of genres (from musical theater to pop), strengthen confidence, creativity and caring. For budding musicians between ages 6 and 10.

A one week musical exploration camp for children to be introduced to several families of instruments including strings, winds, brass, percussion, and keyboard. All students will receive hands on experience with each of the instruments. An applied behavior therapy practice that services clients living in Cuyahoga and surrounding counties. New Heights ABA provides behavioral, verbal language, and social assessment and treatment to children ages 1 to 12 years of age who have been diagnosed with Autism. They provide services to children who have communication, behavioral, and socialization challenges utilizing principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
A Day Academy structure is available for children who qualify.

Their focus is a mild to moderate autism diagnosis focusing on building functional skills as well as addressing behavior and social skills.
