Offers guardianship services to residents of Ohio, ages 18 and over, who have a disability.

Guardianship takes away a person’s ability to make choices. Because the appointment of a guardian takes away a person’s ability to make decisions about his or her life, other options which place fewer restrictions on the person with a disability can be considered first.

This document identifies these less restrictive options and defines how they work.

A brief but comprehensive, nonlegalistic overview of guardianship in Ohio, especially for families who have a child with mental disabilities. Much of the information is also relevant concerning someone with mental illness or concerning someone who has lost competence as the result of an injury or the effects of aging.

All people have a right to self-determination. Knowledge supports and encourages that right. Disability Rights Ohio hopes that the information contained in this online publication will help to strengthen the practical, day-to-day exercise of the right to self-determination for all people with disabilities.
