Education: Secondary Support Programs

The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) published this guide. The Office of Special Education Programs (along with partners in the Rehabilitation Services Administration) has issued this guide to advance efforts in ensuring that all students and youth with disabilities are equipped with the skills and knowledge to be engaged in the 21st century workforce.

This transition guide addresses the following topics to facilitate a seamless transition from school to post-school activities:
Transition planning: opportunities and programs
Transition services and requirements, as authorized by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Rehabilitation Act;
Education and employment options for students and youth with disabilities after leaving secondary school; Supporting decisions made by students and youth with disabilities.

Information on AAPD’s paid summer internships for college students with disabilities in political science and information technology. Interns work for national government representatives and departments.

This program supports college students with ASD in reaching their full potential. Varying levels of academic, social and residential support are designed to aid students in meeting their personal and professional goals.

The Asperger Initiative at Mercyhurst (AIM) is designed for students who, while exhibiting superior intellectual ability, face challenges in executive functioning and social interactions. They offer academic support, social support and counseling support, as well as vocational support.

The Bridges to Adelphi Program offers individualized comprehensive academic, social, and vocational services that are designed to make that transition easier.

The KAP Circle of Support provides four major areas of assistance: private room, study tables mentoring and socials. The theoretical framework for KAP is Social Information Processing Theory and Executive Function Skill Development.

CIP is one of the most comprehensive programs in the world for assisting young adults on the autism spectrum and with learning differences to succeed in college, employment, and independent living. CIP’s mission is to inspire independence and expand the foundation on which young adults can build happy and productive lives.

– Workbooks and resources for parents

For individuals ages 16 to 26. Some services may be covered by insurance or public assistance. Families are encouraged to check with their insurance companies and with public assistance agencies to understand what coverage may be available.

CLE can support students with unique learning needs and help them with college, independent living, career development, academics, and social skills. There are several offices available nationwide, all located close to secondary learning institutions.

The College Success Program for Students Living with Autism Spectrum Disorder provides targeted support, practical knowledge, and cultural awareness to students living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It is designed to maximize students’ potential as they live and learn within a caring Christian community.

For nearly 50 years, Echoing Hills has supported thousands of families, friends, and neighbors through our outreach to people with disabilities.

Their programs align with their values: the right to choose, the dignity of each person, personal fulfillment in God’s plan and a relationship with Jesus Christ. They provide choice recreational, residential, vocational, travel and educational services throughout the State of Ohio and internationally.

They accept waivers, including the I/O, Level 1 and Ohio Home Care. Other options include County Board of Developmental Disabilities matching funds and private pay.

InclusiveU is an initiative of the Taishoff Center for Inclusive Higher Education, committed to individualized and inclusive higher educational opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is a comprehensive college experience for students with intellectual disabilities including individualized coursework, person-centered planning, professional internships, and social and extracurricular activities.

The Lawrence B. Taishoff Center for Inclusive Higher Education is committed to individualized and inclusive higher educational opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Kelly Autism Program offers educational support through Individual Education Plan assistance, classroom adaptations and tutoring, community involvement through active participation in community activities, social and leisure activities, job coaching, and parent support. They support clients ages 6 to adult.

KAP offers programs for Elementary, Middle and High School students. They also offer a college support program through WKU.

This is a private pay service, with some financial assistance available.

A comprehensive college support program and transitional program for young adults with Asperger’s, ADHD and learning disabilities. They provide a wide range of supportive services to help students meet their potential as they attend college, including individual psychotherapy, educational coaching, life skills training, nutritional education, fitness coaching, and life coaching services.

Located in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, they are supported by six surrounding colleges.

There is an additional support office based in Seattle, WA.

The Raiders on the Autism Spectrum Excelling (RASE) program assists students on the spectrum as they transition from high school to college. Currently, the RASE program consists of a therapeutic support group and a transition coach program.

SAILS (Supported Academics and Independent Life Services) at Seattle Central College is located in the heart of Seattle, in the vibrant Capital Hill neighborhood.

SAILS provides individualized academic coaching services for students with ASD so they can be successful in college. In collaboration with Student Services, Faculty, Staff, and Campus Departments to facilitate a positive college experience for students with ASD. Their goal is to empower students by creating opportunity for their educational success. They encourage independence with an inclusive, whole life approach. They teach students with disabilities to effectively self advocate in college.

Three-year post-secondary educational program for young adults ages 18 and older with intellectual disabilities. This is a Christian, non-degree granting program that offers programs to aid in college success.

STEP provides enhanced training at EIU on Academic, Social, and Daily-living skills (ASD) to allow students the opportunity to navigate their college experience successfully.

Any potential student will need to have been accepted to Eastern Illinois University prior to enrollment in STEP.

Threshold is a 2-year, campus-based program for motivated young adults with special needs and diverse learning challenges. After graduation, students can enroll in 1 of 2 post-graduate programs to help them further develop independent living skills and job skills.

The TOPS Program is a 2-year portfolio or 4-year certificate program that focuses on 4 basic transition areas: Academics, Employment, Independent Living, and Self-Determination & Student Development.

The TOPS program is not a degree granting program but a catalyst for employment and/or a bridge to degree granting programs.

There are 2 educational programs — 2-Year Certificate of Completion Track (60 semester hours); and a
4-Year Generalized Studies Certificate Track (120 semester hours). There is also an Employment program, self-determination & student development program, and an independent living program.
