Part 11: Cooperation Between Home and School or Daycare

Being consistent between home and school is key to your child’s success.

 
 
Some ways to promote being on the same page include:

  • Schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher or daycare provider to start planning. As a team, you can support one another in achieving the ultimate goal of the child’s continence throughout the day.
  • Share information about your child’s toileting patterns at home and communicate your goals. Ask how your child is doing at school and set goals together.
  • Consult with other professionals at the school or daycare, including the speech-language pathologist, regarding supports for your child’s toilet training plan.
  • Maintain regular communication to keep everyone on the team on the same page.
  • Sometimes situations arise that interfere with consistency for both teachers and parents. Rather than harboring negative feelings, both teachers and parents should continue to be committed to working together as a team and developing a consistent plan on the approach to use. When toilet training is not successful and needs to be reviewed, meet to explore what can be improved. Sometimes you may need other resources, support, or services.
  • Support one another’s efforts by communicating any information that may affect toilet training such as medical conditions, changes in medications and/or diet.
  • Develop a written toilet training plan to support all caregivers in both environments in using the same language, routine, and supports.
