At its most basic, Supported Decision Making presumes that, with appropriate support, persons with disabilities can retain their legal rights to make their own decisions, and not turn over those rights to a guardian. The concept has been supported in numerous courts, but each state must implement its own law. For families looking for solutions to long-term support for their loved ones, SDM provides an appealing alternative to guardianship.
